(Oklahoma, City, OK) The Canadian Men's Slo-Pitch Team jumped out to an early lead in the fourth edition of the Border Battle between Canada and the United States, but a 20 run inning by the Americans was enough to give them the 32-21 win.
The Canadians scored four runs in the first inning, led by Jeff Falardeau (Welland, ON), Todd Cadenhead (Vaughan, ON) and Claude Chiasson (Ste-Julie, QC) who all hit homeruns and spotted Canada an early 4-0 lead. In the second inning, Canada scored three runs as Chris Parr (Chilliwack, BC) hit a three-run shot over the right center field wall. After two complete innings of play, Canada led by a7-4 score. In the third, Canada added two more runs to take a 9-4 lead as the defence held the strong American team to no runs in the bottom of the third inning.
With the momentum on their side, the Canadian team added nine more runs highlighted by two more homeruns, one by Chris Parr and another by Todd Cadenhead. However, Team USA finally found their groove and put up 20 runs in the bottom fourth to take a 24-18 lead. In the fifth, the Canadian team had another two-run blast by Todd Cadenhead to cut the lead to 24-20 as the USA was held scoreless once again. Canada was also held scoreless in the sixth while the Americans added eight more runs to their lead. A homerun by Luc Chauvette (Trois-Rivieres, QC) was all the Canadians could put together in the top of the seventh and USA prevailed by a score of 32-21.
Canada pounded out 26 hits in the game. Todd Cadenhead led the way with three homeruns and six runs batted in, while Chris Parr had two homeruns with five RBI's. Other homeruns came from Jeff Falardeau, Luc Chauvette and Claude Chiasson. Tim Bentley (Chatham, ON) went two-for-three with two runs batted in, while Franck Henry (Ste-Hyacinthe, QC) collected four hits. Al Blais (Maple, ON) also chipped in with three hits.
In the pitcher's circle, Chris Parr pitched three and two thirds innings and allowed 24 runs, but only eight of them earned as Team Canada committed two errors. Ryan Wood (Winnipeg, MB) pitched two innings and a third in relief, also allowing eight runs on 12 hits.
