Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend

Well, softball diamonds anyway. Team BC made light work of Manitoba in a workmanlike fashion defeating them 8-1 in six innings to win the Gold medal.

Starting pitcher Sara Groenewegen (Surrey), who read the Athlete's Oath at the Opening Ceremony, was focussed and determined and it showed as she led her team to victory.

"You know we only came together one week ago today and we really bonded," said an elated Groenewegen. "Not one person did it today or any other day. We all contributed every game."

Head coach Gord Collings (Delta) agreed. "I'm so very pleased for this team," he said. "They put in the effort right from day one. Each and every one of them contributed to this win. These girls are like sponges, they absorb every thing I tell them."

Taylor Lundrigan (Abbotsford) contributed both offensively and defensively. She tripled in the first, had a sacrifice fly to score a run in the second, tripled in the fourth and singled in the sixth. In the fifth, she made an outstanding play to end the inning after a Manitoba threat.

Groenewegen now takes her local team to Winnipeg in two weeks to compete in the National Championships.

Not to be outdone, the men's team won a Bronze medal after battling all day. They lost the deciding game 7-3 to Saskatchewan but earned valuable flag points for Team BC.
